Spring 2021 News

New Referrals Closed - No Longer Accepting New Clients (September 2020):

After significant consideration our staff has determined that we can no longer accept new referrals as of September 2020 due to overwhelming demand for services. We are unlikely to open to new referrals in 2021 given current demand for treatment sessions. We are actively trying to hire more psychologists to meet demand for services.

Since opening our practice in 2012 we have worked hard to provide quality, effective, and timely care for clients/patients of our practice. As demand for psychological services has increased significantly since the onset of COVID-19 we feel like we can no longer sustain our current high standards for care if we continue to accept new referrals at this time.

While we absolutely understand this news will not be easily accepted by those seeking help, we unanimously feel as though it is the best decision for our current clients requiring care and those already waiting months for services (as most of us are booking well into 2021 as of August 2020).

We are always monitoring our ability to take on new clients and this page will be updated immediately when new referrals will be accepted again.
Please note there will be no waitlist/cancellation-list or similar list maintained during this time - all referrals will be treated as new when we re-open for referrals at some point in the new year.

Please note this may also impact existing clients/families who have not made an appointment at our office for 1+ year(s) or whose previous treatment provider is no longer employed with us. You may be asked to re-refer to your existing provider due to wait times/availability or be asked to call another clinic/office if your previous provider is no longer working at our clinic.

The IWK Community Mental Health program and Emergency services can be obtained through contacting their Central Referral line at (902) 464-4110. Other private practices can be found by visiting apns.ca and searching for a child psychologist or by your referral concern (e.g., anxiety, depression, behaviour issues, etc).

Online free help for anxiety can be found by visiting
AnxietyCanada and a number of books or online resources can also be helpful including the free MindShift CBT App (found on AnxietyCanada) or books focused on the evidence-based approaches to treating child anxiety.

If you have questions or concerns regarding the above decision please email Dr. Chorney directly by email (drchorney @ gmail.com) although please keep in mind exceptions will not be made regarding the above policy/decision.
We Are Hiring:

Our practice is constantly trying to meet the demand of accepting new referrals while providing exceptional ongoing care for our existing clients. We work hard to keep waitlists down to two weeks or less for new referrals when possible while also ensuring there are reasonable spaces available for existing clients of the practice.

We are currently looking for a PhD-level Clinical Psychologist, Counselling Psychologist, or a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD). Psychologists registered/licensed at the Masters degree level will be considered in some cases.
There are currently TWO positions open - two full-time positions and/or a part time position. Starting time/date is also negotiable and applicants could start as early as immediately OR later in 2021 (or later!).

Our practice focuses on children and adolescents, however, psychologists focusing on adults are also encouraged to apply as we currently do not have a psychologist in this area and have many referrals for young adults (university-aged). The ability to work remotely (via telehealth) is an option during COVID19 (and potentially after).

Our group of psychologists is composed of primarily child/adolescent focused CBT practitioners who provide evidence-based care to families and young adults. Our practice is collaborative with possibilities for supervision and consultation when needed while also allowing for independence and flexibility in practice. Scheduling and holiday/vacation time is flexible throughout the year and compensation is in line with other local practices. We work hard to promote work life balance with all our staff.

If you or someone you know may be interested or would like to know more, please email a CV directly to Dr. Chorney and if you'd like to learn more about our practice please visit the
About Us page.

Fee Increase:

Effective May 31st, 2021 our fees will increase to $210 per therapy hour. Initial appointments (1.5hrs) will become $315. This fee increase was previously set to take effect in 2020 but due to COVID-19 the decision was made to delay the increase one full year until 2021 and is consistent with the suggested rate by our provincial psychology association (APNS).

Farewell Dr. G!:

After five years of providing treatment and assessment services at our office, Dr. Ayala Gorodzinsky is leaving us to open her own practice! If you are a current client interested in continuing to receive treatment from Dr. Gorodzinsky or someone looking to book with her for the first time, please contact her directly through her practice website here - Birchside Psychology.

If you were a client of Dr. G's and would like to remain a client of someone at our practice, please email that clinician directly so they can determine if a transfer is a good fit (and if not they may be able to direct you towards someone who is). All of our emails are found on the
Contacts page of this website.

COVID-19 Updates:

June 25th 2020:

Our office is in the beginning stages of preparation for a limited re-opening for some specific individuals or appointments. Please note this does NOT mean we are open for all appointments. Guidelines approved by the provincial government have stated that cases should be considered if they "appear to be worsening or are in acute crisis, and those who need a more intense level of care that is not being met via telepsychology." If you would like to read these guidelines they can be found here.

If you believe this reflects your current situation or circumstances, please directly email your provider to inquire about the possibility of an appointment. As a side note, many of our providers may not be able to provide services in-person at this time due to other restraints (e.g., child care, vulnerabilities related to health, other concerns) so telepsychology will likely continue to be our primary form of treatment method over the coming weeks or months.

If you would like to learn more about
our Telepsychology services our site provides a description of what we offer and you can email your provider directly if you have specific questions.

If you have been scheduled for an in-person appointment, please see
our COVID-19 page.
